Upholstery & Mattress Cleaning

Like your carpets and rugs, the upholstery and mattresses in your home can often be unseen victims of daily life.

Expert Upholstery & Mattress Cleaning in London

The dirt and dust accumulated on mattresses, armchairs, sofas, curtains and other soft furnishings isn’t always visible, and the slow deterioration in the look and feel of these areas of a property is often so gradual that we barely even notice it.

However, over time and as dirt, dust, grime and natural skin oils build up in the fabric and fibres, these accessories that say so much about your personality and personal taste slowly but surely begin to lose their lustre.

Colours become more muted, the feel of the fabrics themselves is more brittle to the touch, and the natural dust that is present in all homes dulls their appearance. The same is true of mattresses. It may be unpleasant to think about, but even though it spends most of its 20-year average life span covered by sheets and other bed linen, your mattress will absorb a lot of natural body and hair oils, skin debris, sweat and dirt through daily use.

Every now and then, it pays to have your upholstery and mattresses professionally cleaned to bring them all back to their very best and, at the same time, extend their lifetime. Remember that chairs, sofas and mattresses are neglected will need replacing earlier than is absolutely necessary – and good quality replacements can be expensive.

How does upholstery cleaning work?

For more information about soft furnishings such as curtains and blinds, please visit our Curtain and Blinds Cleaning Service page.

There are two primary ways of cleaning upholstered furniture. The most common method, which we use on most durable fabrics and materials, is hot water extraction.

This involves injecting the fabric with a mixture of cleaning solution and hot water that loosens and lifts even the most stubborn dirt, grease, and dust particles. Once this has been achieved, we apply a powerful vacuum to extract unwanted debris.

For leather and more delicate upholstery we would use a dry cleaning method that is kind on the material and eliminates the risk of damage.

Both methods are highly effective and leave long-lasting results that we’re confident you’ll be delighted with.

How does mattress cleaning work?

As with your upholstered furniture, the most effective way to clean your mattress is to pre-treat any stains with a special solution and follow this with hot water extraction as described above.

Some people are tempted to use a generic steam cleaner for a DIY approach to cleaning a mattress. We would strongly advise against this approach, as there is a significant risk of excess moisture being retained within the mattress that, if not allowed to dry properly and over a long period, may lead to mould and rust developing.

Our mattress cleaning removes dust mites that may be present in the fabric of the mattress and includes treatment with anti-allergens to ensure your mattress is hygienically clean.

We would recommend having your mattress professionally cleaned twice a year, with a monthly vacuum on both sides in between cleans.

Please note that some types of stain – such as some hair dyes, inks and so on, are permanent and whilst it may be possible, in some cases, to reduce the visibility of these stains, it is not possible to remove them completely. This is especially true if you have previously attempted to remove these types of stains yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

As with most things, looking after your upholstery and mattresses with regular cleaning not only helps to keep them looking good, but it also helps to prolong their life cycle, meaning you can avoid the expense of replacing what are usually very expensive items. In the case of mattresses, in particular, there’s also a hygiene consideration – over time and with regular use your mattresses will accumulate dust, dirt, skin debris and sweat, and only a really deep clean will get them hygienically clean.

In addition to regular vacuuming and dusting, we recommend having your upholstery professionally cleaned on an annual basis, including the addition of a protective product such as Scotchguard to offer a line of defence against spillages and marks.

Mattresses are slightly different. Most, if not all, mattresses should be turned every six months. We recommend having your mattresses professionally cleaned on one of these occasions and to clean them yourself by using a damp cloth and then vacuuming once dry (and it’s very important to ensure the mattress is totally dry before re-covering with bed linen).

The most common method we use on durable fabrics and materials is hot water extraction, which involves injecting a mixture of cleaning solution and hot water into the fabric to loosen and lift stubborn dirt, grease, and dust particles. We then apply a powerful vacuum to extract all the unwanted materials. In the case of more delicate fabrics and leather we use a dry-cleaning method that eliminates the risk of damage.

Your mattress is pre-treated with a special solution to tackle any stains before being cleaned by hot water extraction, where a safe cleaning solution is mixed with hot water and injected into the fabric of the mattress to lift dirt and dust, before being left to dry and then vacuumed. Our mattress cleaning also removes dust mites and includes treatment with anti-allergens to ensure your mattress is hygienically clean.

Although you may be tempted to clean your upholstery or mattress yourself, you risk causing more damage if you don’t know exactly what to do. In the case of upholstery, you may make a stain or mark worse, and with a mattress there is a risk that it is not left to dry for long enough, leading to mould as well as rusted springs.
