Domestic cleaning 'particularly important in the bathroom' - 30/11/2011

Domestic cleaning is particularly crucial in the bathroom in order to stem the spread of germs, a new study has indicated.

While it is important to ensure the entire house is as clean as possible, if homeowners must concentrate on just one area, the bathroom is the best place to start.

Research conducted by the University of Colorado has shown bacteria are rife in washrooms, the Canadian Press Association reports.

The team tested 12 bathroom surfaces across the university campus to see how bad the problem was and although the areas were well maintained by domestic cleaning staff, germs were still prevalent. Findings from the study were published in the journal PLoS One.

"We know that we do not live in a sterile world," head of microbiology at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto Dr Andrew Simor was quoted as saying.

"There are bacteria all around us. And in particular, we're going to find human bacteria in places where humans are," he added.

Representatives at insurer Sheilas' Wheels recently urged men not to put off domestic cleaning for so long, after finding 1.7 million British males do not wash their bed sheets for a month at a time.
