Tips issued on beating 'carpet beetles' - 12/11/2008
Householders should try and remove traces of carpet beetles as soon as they infest the home, industry experts report.
Aggie MacKenzie, presenter of Channel 4's How Clean Is Your House, has urged
domestic cleaners to tackle the bugs as they can eat through fabrics and cause holes.
Speaking to the Times, the cleaning expert explained that the beetles grow to four millimetres in length and can be brown, cream and grey coloured.
Domestic cleaners should dry clean fabrics which show signs of the beetles and thoroughly vacuum carpets.
Ms MacKenzie also advised householders to find the source of the beetles in order to fully eradicate them.
"Birds' nests, animal remains or dead insects are favourite hang-outs, so search the loft first for signs of these," she said.
"Then look for traces of damage in airing cupboards, wardrobes and chests where clothes and blankets are stored, as well as under carpets and rugs."
Pest Control Direct reports that carpet beetles can live up to six weeks and do most damage when in their larvae stage.
