Men urged not to put off home cleaning for so long - 16/11/2011
British men have been warned to get their act together when it comes to home cleaning, following a damning survey.
A study conducted by insurance firm Sheilas' Wheels has discovered that 1.7 million males wait for more than a month before washing their bedding.
Leaders at the insurer have warned that as temperatures plummet to as low as -15 degrees C this winter, bed bugs will be increasingly attracted to warm bedding.
Around 16 per cent of men said they sleep on the same sheets for 30 days, while four per cent admitted to not cleaning their linen for more than two months at a time.
Home cleaning is also made more urgent by the growing number of households that are buying second-hand furniture, as a pre-owned mattress can contain up to ten million bed bugs.
"Simple measures like avoiding eating in bed, leaving the sheets exposed during the day and washing them regularly can help avoid an infestation," commented Jacky Brown of Sheilas' Wheels.
Cleaning companies recently heard from Marianne Davey of the British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association that mattresses should be vacuum cleaned on a regular basis and pillows changed every few months.
