Significant house cleaning could be needed this winter - 15/11/2011
More people may be forced to undertake significant house cleaning tasks this winter due to the damage caused by burst pipes.
According to figures released by Axa this week, the average insurance claim over the past two years relating to damaged pipes was £25,000.
The number of reports being filed during the same timeframe has grown by 50 per cent and the total amount paid out by insurance firms has stood at £1 billion.
Bosses at the firm have suggested too many Britons face huge house cleaning bills because they are not taking the most basic steps to prevent flooding.
The company noted that only 42 per cent of people insulate their pipes, while just 45 per cent leave their heating on low during the winter months in order to stop water from freezing within their pipes.
"Insurance cannot compensate for the misery and disruption of having your home and contents destroyed by water," commented head of household claims at Axa Christine Matthews.
Last month, cleaning companies were alerted to the problem of burst pipes by the Consumer Council for Water, which warned households that damage to tubes is not always immediately obvious.
